Why won't 2004 jaguar s type not take gas when it is not full?

I've been having an issue with putting premium gas in my 2004 Jagaur S-TYPE. When I try to put gas in it will act as if it is full after the first $2.00 is pumped in,even if I'm nearly on empty. I thought it may be due to air trapped in certain pumps due to people not really using premuim gas these days,but it is starting to happen too often.
